Blessed
Blessed are the poor and the
forgotten
Blessed the weary and the
misbegotten
The needy and the dispossessed
The homeless and the
wanderers
Those with no name and no
history
The billions who leave no
trace
Save in a smile seen in a
face
Whose lives once
sparkled
Brief and distant
Anonymous and indolent
One tiny star in the galaxy of
the ages
Who left no record
Died quietly or
horribly
Sacrificed for greater
good
On battlefields
in prison camps
Of cholera typhoid
and the damp
Bean fed and dehydrated
Whose gifts so grossly
underrated
Talents disregarded
Who never did anything
But lived and in living
loved
Some little thing
Caressed a cat
Or grieved over a dead
flower
Themselves to wither and to
die
Blessed are the helpless and
bemused
The hopeless careless and
confused
Who never achieved anything
Never ever won anything
Became frustrated and
despaired
Took their own lives and
smothered their children
Lest they might suffer
more
In silence watched and patient
waited
And in offering no
resistance
Delivered up their
lives
And merely held within
themselves
Some little time
The helix of existence
That we might suffer search and
hope for grace
That one day one distant day
Just one of us to know
Our destiny inside our
heads
That we have already been there -
and forgotten
