    JUNE 18:
MASS CARNIVAL WILL BRING CITY TO A STANDSTILL

Chaos is expected to grip the City of London on June 18 as thousands of people descend on Europe's most powerful financial centre to hold a mass protestand carnival.

Timed to coincide with the start of the G8 Summit in Cologne, the hugegathering is part of an international movement intending to spotlight the links between economic globalisation, poverty, and the destruction of the Earth's environment.

Expected to attend are activists from the notorious 'Biotic Baking Brigade'- made famous for throwing cream pies in the faces of powerful men. Offices of major corporations and banks are also likely to be occupied by revellers, whileReclaim the Streets is holding a 'Carnival against Capital' which is almost certain tobring the City to a standstill.

No single organisation or leader is steering the June 18 movement, which is an international network of autonomous groups from 43 countries.Demonstrations and other events will be taking place over a 24-hour period in 70 cities acrossthe globe.

In Sydney 'Critical Mass' bike rides will hold up cars on major freeways; inLagos, Nigeria, the oil giants who have wreaked havoc in the Niger Delta regionwill find themselves targeted; and in Bangladesh garment workers will be holding a mass protest. In Edinburgh counterfeit 'Bank of Bigotry' ten pound notes willflood across the city.

The day is being held "in recognition that the global capitalist systembased on the exploitation of people and the planet for the profit of a few is at the veryroot of our social and ecological troubles", according to June 18 participant Mark Sully.

Just like the banks and stock exchanges, the activists are electronicallynetworked. June 18 reports will sweep round the world via TV and radio, all live on theInternet.
