STEVE MUMBERSON

I first started making faces in my childhood, and the human head has appeared continiously in my work. It is difficult to pin my interest, but my travels in Africa, interest in primitive art and my urban life. Everyday in London I see thousands of faces, mask like, ghostly meeting of other faces on the streets, tubes, galleries or parks. These half remembered recollections sit in my mind, often reappearing in drawings, print and other works. It is a strange but true how the human face on mass has a mask like collective image. Like masks from a Mexican festival, they are neither fearful or humourous, but a strange symbolic mixture inbetween.
