IN JASMINE'S CASE

Dr Raymond O'Conner records:
I taught Jasmine, my three year old daughter, that when anyone refers to "up" she must refer to it as "down". That everyone else's 'right' must be her 'left'. I taught her to refer to 'above' as 'below' and visa-verse. I taught her that the earth is a hollow sphere and that night is occasioned by a daily lunar eclipse. That the moon is much larger than the sun and that we adhere to the earth's surface by virtue of centrifugal force (as with her mothers spin dryer). I taught her that Jesus delivered the Christmas presents and that Father Christmas had died to save her from her sins, which were many and various- some so heinous that God in his mercy will never reveal their nature to her.

After relatively short periods of solitary confinement and fasting she began to experience vivid, mystical experiences of a macabre kind. I papered the walls of her nursery with enlarged reproductions of the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel and discovered that even without the assistance of psycho-active drugs she was able to "enter" The Garden of Earthly Delights and "walk through" The Temptation of St Anthony. This world is now as real to her as our
