Hilary Powell was born on the Isle of Man and now lives in London. Hilary is fascinated by the urban wasteland returning to it again and again as a stage for her large scale site installations. She seeks out those discarded locations from deserted swimming pools to the bunker basements of ex battery factories - breathing momentary life to the dormant or derelict. Composing with materials, lighting, soundscape and smell Hilary creates total, almost extra sensory environments. With a background in fine art (BFA Ruskin school of drawing and fine art, Oxford University) and Scenography (M.A Central St Martins College of Art and Design-working in Prague and Amsterdam) Hilary's verve for highly atmospheric installations has developed with her recent shows in Hackney and Berlin. Hilary is becoming increasingly concerned with performance in time and space, and figures are often to be found occupying the landscapes she has constructed. She is concerned with both writing in and around space as she pursues her PhD in Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths College, London. Here practice and theory combine in an investigation of the recycling of waste sites or leftovers of industrial transformation by artistic appropriation or intervention. Within this, photography and film also play a key role including urban imaging and the issues of documentary and documentation. |
